Nee and Bumps

My husband’s grandparents were married in the 1930’s. They are called Nee and Bumps. That’s how my sister-in-law pronounced the names when she was learning to talk. The names stuck.

When their 60th anniversary was approaching I decided to make them a quilt to commemorate the event. I chose 1930 reproduction prints and a version of the Drunkards Path block called The Love Ring. I also had it quilted with the clamshell motif. I felt these were components available in the 1930’s.

This was one of the first quilts I made. I wasn’t great at sewing the curves the Drunkards Path block required. But I eventually figured it out. We had also just moved, and I had to find someone to longarm the quilt for me. I had no idea how to hand quilt so longarmming was my only option. Who knew that I would eventually be the one to be the longarmer.

I really enjoyed finding everything that would make that a special gift for them. They would use it for many years. It was returned to my husband and I after they both had passed and is now helping keep some of their great-great-grandchildren warm at our house on cold Colorado nights.
